LIFE OF A GREAT MAN 



MAHATMA GANDHI 

 
Early life: Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, the father of the Indian nation is known to the world as Mahatma Gandhi. He was born at Porbundar in Rajkot on the 2nd October of 1869. His father Karam Chand Gandhi was the Prime Minister of Rajkot. Putli Bai was his mother. She was a saintly lady and her son worshipped her as a goddess, Gandhi was brought up in a conservative Hindu family . He had his early edu cation at Rajkot. He was honest, truthful and lover of mankind from his childhood. He was married to Kasturba when he was only a boy of thirteen. Gandhi was not a brilliant student. After passing the Matriculation Examination in 1887, he decided to go to England for higher education. But the decision was opposed by all orthodox people. Gandhiji, however, got permission from his mother to start for England on his promising not to touch meat or wine. He kept his promise to the last day of his life, He left for England to qualify for the bar in 1888. He was then the father of a child.

As a lawyer: Gandhiji lived for several years in England. In England he lived a spotless life. He passed. his examination in due course and became a barrister . He gathered experiences of English life, manners and custom. He studied the Christian religion and many religious men became his friends! All his English friends loved him for his high moral character and nobleness of mind. Gandhi returned to India in 1893 and started to practise as barrister in the Bombay High Court. As a lawyer he became unsuccessful. The profession of a lawyer was unsuitable for him. He could not support false and unjust cases. At that time an Indian merchant Africa for legal advice. invited him to South Africa.

In South Africa : Gandhiji was mortified to see the Position of the Indians in South Africa. There were great Indian merchants in South Africa , but they were all treated as slaves by Europeans and were openly insulted by them. Gandhiji himself was insulted and beaten. He determined to fight for the rights of the Indians and many joined him in his non - violent movement. In the struggle many persons suffered untold miseries. At last a compromise was arrived at. It was in South Africa where Gandhiji had his first lessons in politics and learnt the power of non - violence. Indians in South Africa shall never forget the services rendered by Mahatma Gandhi for the good of the Indian Community. He returned to India in 1915.
   
ln India: Mahatma Gandhi became a prominent Congress man . He started the Non-co-operation move ment in 1920, Politics in India took a new shape . British goods were boycotted. The whole country joined Gandhiji. The British Government resorted to violent repression but nothing could discourage the people. Mahatma Gandhi was also sent to prison on many occasions. During the Second Great War Gandhiji refused to co-operate with the British and raised the slogan ' Quit India' . Gandhiji and his followers were severely prosecuted. After the war, on the 15th August 1947 Gandhiji brought independence for the people of India . But India was divided into Hindustan and Pakistan . Social Service : Gandhiji was a great social worker . He felt for the poor and distressed . He devoted him self to the cause of untouchable. His Harijan move ment was a great success. He tried his level best to bring about unity between the Hindus and the Muslims. His love for Muslim was very great. Some orthodox Hindus regarded Gandhiji as the enemy of their com munity and in mad fury one of them shot him dead on the 30th January of 1948 . 

Conclusion: Gandhiji was a saint and his hermitage was at Sevagram near Wardha. He is dead but he has become immortal. He was a man of strict principle , honest , truthful and deeply religious. He was ready to respond to the call of the suffering humanity . He was the real leader of the masses . He could win the love and admiration of the whole world. For his varied qualities of head and heart he was called the Mahatma.
